In a Solar Water Heater system the storage tank is horizontally mounted immediately above the solar collectors on the roof. No pumping is required as the hot water naturally rises into the tank through thermo siphon flow. In a “pump-circulated” system the storage tank is ground- or floor-mounted and is below the level of the collectors; a circulating pump moves water or heat transfer fluid between the tank and the collectors. Circulatory pumps will require electricity to pump cold water to the solar collectors.

Solar Water Heater systems are designed to deliver hot water for most of the year and work very well in India. However, in winter in some hilly and cold parts of the country the heat from the sun might not be enough to heat water and supplementary heating, using gas or electricity might be required.

Capacities of roof top mounted solar water heaters can range from 100 liters per day to a few thousand liters per day.
